Brief introduction


Southwest Jiaotong University, located in China's famous historical and cultural city Chengdu, is a national key university and affiliated to the Ministry of the Education of China. The university is a member of the 211 Project, Featured 985 Project and 2011 Project of China. The School of Materials Science and Engineering was founded on the basis of the former Department of Mining and Metallurgy ofTangshan Engineering Institute of Jiaotong University (primitive name of our university), which was set up in 1931. In 1952, with the adjustment of departments, the majors of Mining, Metallurgy, and materials science engineering were moved out. In 1979, the university began to re-establish the major of materials. In 1985, the Department of Materials Engineering was established. After 16 years later, the School of Materials Science and Engineering was officially founded. Over the past 80 years, the School of Materials Science Engineering has fostered a large number of domestic well-known experts in this research field. Three of them were awarded the Achievement Medal of “Two Bombs and One Satellite” Program, and fifteen of them were the members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.



Currently, our school has postgraduate degrees of the first-level discipline programs, i.e., doctoral and master programs in the majors of materials science and engineering, a master program in the biomedical Engineering science. The school recruits undergraduates in the major of Materials Science and Engineering, Material Molding and Control Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. There are 117 staff members; one of them is the member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (dual appointment). There are 27 professors and 23 doctoral advisers. 73% of staff with high-grade professional titles has PhD degree. Our students are consisted of 1177 undergraduates, 448 graduates and 118 PhD candidates. With the support of the school, National Center of Materials Experimental Demonstration, Key Laboratory of Advanced Technologies of Materials, Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Sichuan Advanced Surface Engineering of Human Organs, Research Center of Sichuan Low-Dimensional Composite Materials Engineering and Research Center of Sichuan Advanced Welding and Surface Engineering were officially established. The main research areas related to biomaterials and surface modification, functional polymers and composite materials, nano-materials and nano-technology, key materials for high-speed railway, surface engineering, ecological materials and material molding technology. In recent 5 years, more than 300 key scientific projects are undertaken, such as National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), the Key Technologies Research and Development Program, National Defense Pre-study Foundation, National Defense Basic Scientific Research Program, National Natural Science Foundation of China, New Century Excellent Talents Foundation, and major University-Industry Cooperation projects, with an annual scientific research funds more than 10 million RMB. About 800 research papers have been published in SCI, EI and ISTP journals. Presiding over the scientific researches of new cardiovascular implants, nano-antimicrobial materials, new materials for railway, light invisible materials and new welding technology have been achieved commercialization, which has won more attention and praise from academics at home and abroad.
